Ode to My Dressing Gown

If anyone ever asked me what my favourite piece of clothing in the whole wide world was, honestly, without hesitation, I would reply with absolute conviction, ‘My dressing gown, of course!’.

Maybe it is part of my getting older and caring less about what other people think of me, and also partly because earlier this year I moved to a cold climate and currently live in a house with an inside temperature that resembles a cold storage facility, but I find myself wearing my dressing gown more and more and to be honest, I don’t have an issue with that!

I, of course, do shower every morning and put my day clothes on, but if the feeling is right, that fluffy dressing gown goes bang on straight over the top. Please don’t think I’m that far gone that I would go down the street or to the shops with it on, although I do confess I may pop out to the driveway wearing it now and then, whilst surreptitiously bringing the bins in/out or checking the mailbox. I live in a quiet street and small town now, so I don’t expect too much backlash or sniggering but on the other hand – who cares!

What is it about the dressing gown that is so special, you may think (or not!)? I mean, let’s face it, guys, if you were given the opportunity to live your life wearing PJs or leisure wear 24/7, wouldn’t you jump at the chance? No uncomfortable bras or slimming underwear (or what I call my ‘suck me in undies’), no need to worry about too-tight-fitting items or having to pull/tug things down, up or sideways. To me, the thought of that is absolute bliss. Then, to top it all off, in colder weather, it can be accompanied with coordinated fluffy slippers/socks – win/win!

Now I live in the country and it is often wet outside, I also have (even to my own disbelief) resorted to wearing something I promised myself I would never, ever own in a million years – a colour coordinated pair of fluffy Crocs! However, I term these as my ‘rural slippers’ to ease the pain of saying I now own a pair of Crocs. (Please see photo of evidence below - Exhibit A)

There is just something so comforting about putting my dressing gown on and wrapping it around me. It’s kind of akin to a big warm hug. The pressures and challenges of the day seem to dissipate once I slip into my beloved dressing gown. At night time, in front of the television with my feet up on the recliner, the fire on and my foofy four-legged girl next to me, I sigh a sigh of utter contentment … life doesn’t get much better than this!
